THREE SHORT-TERM FELLOWSHIPS IN HONOR OF EVA SCHLER

The Medici Grand Ducal Archive (Mediceo del Principato), housed at the Archivio di Stato in Florence and comprising over four million letters dating from 1537 to 1743, provides the most complete record of any princely regime in early modern Italy as well as an extraordinarily rich historical reservoir of European history. This collection offers an incomparable panorama of historical data, expressed through the words of the people most immediately involved, opening new windows onto the political, diplomatic, gastronomic, economic, artistic, scientific, military, and medical culture of early modern Tuscany and Europe.

The Medici Archive Project (MAP) wishes to provide young scholars with the opportunity to have exposure to original source materials and training in their use. Thanks to the generous gift from Joan A. McClure and Michael L. Schler in honor of Michael's late mother Eva Schler, MAP is offering three short-term fellowships for scholars who are either in the late stages of their dissertation work or within a year from having received their doctoral degree.

•the first two are open to scholars of any nationality working on any field related to early modern Italy (preferably with a specific emphasis on Tuscany or Medici history);
•the third is for a scholar of any nationality working on any topic related to early modern Jewish women in Italy.

This scholarly residence will be of considerable benefit in helping students to gain the necessary skills, experience and confidence to continue independent academic research in their academic specialization. While undertaking research on primary sources in Florence, fellows will benefit from the supervision of the MAP Staff as well as from academics drawn from a variety of disciplines, who are experts in archival research, paleography, and digital humanities. Fellows may be asked to participate in entering transcriptions relevant to their research in BIA (bia.medici.org), MAP’s online digital platform.

Each fellowship will last for an uninterrupted period of three and half months, taking place at any point between 1 September 2017 and 1 April 2018.

The ideal candidates for the fellowships will have the following qualifications: a completed M. Phil (or equivalent) or PhD degree received after January 2016, in any field of early modern humanities; fluency in English and Italian; and, preferably, a research topic relevant to the content of archives in Florence or Tuscany. The fellowships are open to candidates from any nationalities.

The fellowship stipend is US $6,000.
To apply for these fellowships, the following material should be sent electronically to Thomas

Brownlees (brownlees@medici.org):

•A copy of the candidate’s dissertation proposal or abstract.
•A short essay (two pages maximum) on how a candidate’s topic will benefit from archival research.
•A complete and up-to-date curriculum vitae.
•The name and email address of one scholar, preferably the candidate’s supervisor, who can comment on the applicant’s qualifications and the merits of the research proposal (please do not include letters of recommendation with the application).

The application deadline is on 1 June 2017 at noon. Please specify in the cover letter the type of fellowship you wish to be considered for: “Early Modern Italy” or “Jewish Women”

Please note:

  • All materials submitted by the applicant should be in English;

  • All materials should be in a single pdf file;

  • Please do not include supplementary material (publications, papers, etc.).

    Candidates will be notified by 25 June 2017.
