George Washington Digital Encyclopedia

The Fred W. Smith Library National Library for the Study of George Washington at Mount Vernon seeks scholars interested in contributing articles for inclusion in the George Washington Digital Encyclopedia.

The Encyclopedia is a cutting edge online resource that serves as a primary location for accessible yet rigorously vetted information on the North American colonial experience, the British Empire, Early National America, the Mount Vernon estate, commemoration of the American Revolution, and the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. More than 2,000,000 people accessed the Encyclopedia in the 2016 calendar year, and more than 7,000,000 have accessed it throughout its lifetime.

Through a peer reviewed editorial process, the Encyclopedia is amassing a database of entry-level information on the long 18th century and its memorialization. Each entry’s text is targeted toward the high school AP and undergraduate survey levels. They are fully cited including footnotes and bibliographies.  Hyperlinked citations to primary and secondary source material available online ensure more advanced scholars can also make use of the Encyclopedia.

Entries range anywhere from 750 to 1,000 words depending on the topic. Contributors will be credited by name in the entry.
