Oratunga Winter School: Creating Out of Place

Four days of workshops, collaboration, creative development and critical reflection on art and Country
4-9th June 2017                                                                                                                                                                 Oratunga Cattle Station on the traditional lands of the Adnyamathanha people

Led by celebrated artist and theorist Professor Paul Carter (RMIT) and set in the historic Oratunga cattle station on the traditional lands of the Adnyamathanha people, this four day winter school includes workshops with artists and thinkers affiliated with the J.M. Coetzee Centre for Creative Practice. Interdisciplinary in approach, the winter school examines the role of creativity in the imagination of place. Workshops invite and expect an appropriate engagement with, and response to, Country, but will locate this critically and historically. Practice, and reflection on practice, will be encouraged through a program of solo and group activities.

Distinguished staff include:

• Reg Wilton and Enice Marsh, traditional Adnyamathanha Elders
  (Warkarla Glass Gorge Tours)
• Professor Paul Carter (spatial theorist, artist, writer
• Professor Brian Castro (writer)
• Jill Jones (poet)
• Dr Luke Harrald (composer; media artist)
• Annette Willis (photographer)
• Cheryl Conway (installation artist)
• Sean Williams (writer)

Mornings will feature a workshop session, focusing on a different medium each day. Afternoons will be dedicated to participants’ own creative practice and, each evening, a capstone workshop will be led by Paul Carter.
Oratunga Winter School will be a fantastic opportunity to meet inspiring individuals and to explore new ways of creating out of place, with the assistance and guidance of expert practitioners.
