The Symposium Islamic Arts in Bosnia and Herzegovina would like to point out the importance of artistic and architectural heritage of Islamic arts in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aim is to launch a dialogue, improve the perception of Islamic arts and give new perspectives. Through the presentation of recent findings and reflections on Islamic arts, this symposium seeks to initiate a number of projects that will contribute to a more adequate positioning of arts in the overall cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Modern interpretations of Islamic arts and architecture, active protection of artistic and architectural heritage, an insight into the arts collections, presentation of the idea of a Museum of Islamic Arts are some of the topics that will be discussed at this symposium.


Applications are open to all who can contribute to a better understanding of Islamic arts in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The topics should relate to one of the following areas:

• architecture
• calligraphy
• bookbinding
• illumination
• miniatures
• ebru
• carpeting
• sepulchral architecture and arts of tombstones
• archeology
• urban planning
• heritage protection (restoration, reconstruction, conservation, ...)
• museum studies
• collection of Islamic arts

 

Applications need to contain the following information:
• Name of the applicant, his/her title and affiliation
• Title of the paper
• Abstract (max. 250 words)
• Short biography (max. 200 words)
• Active email address

Applications in Bosnian or English to be submitted by Monday, 15 May 2017 to haris.dervisevic@ff.unsa.ba

The applicants will be notified by Thursday, 1 June 2017. Applicants whose papers are accepted are expected to submit the final version of their paper by 20 September 2017 so that they can be included into the symposium proceedings.
The official languages of the symposium are Bosnian and English. Accommodation will be provided only if the participant has to travel more than three hours in the day and if the participant is coming from outside of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Directorate for Education and Science of the Riyasat of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Faculty of Islamic Studies University of Sarajevo, Institute for Islamic Tradition of Bosniaks, Gazi Husrev-bey Library, Waqf Directorate, Oriental Institute, Bosniac Institute – Adil Zulfikarpašić Foundation and Islamic Arts Magazine.
