Kursdirektoren:

Martina Wagner-Egelhaaf, Universität Münster, Deutschland

Tomislav Zelić, Universität Zadar, Kroatien

Kursbeschreibung:

Graduate Course at the Inter University Centre Dubrovnik (Croatia)

September 4-8, 2017

Mare Nostrum. Negotiating European Values and Norms in the Mediterranean

Course Directors:

Florian Kläger, University of Bayreuth, Germany

Alfred Sproede, University of Münster, Germany

Martina Wagner-Egelhaaf, University of Münster, Germany

Tomislav Zelić, University of Zadar, Croatia

Course Description:

When Paul Valéry wrote his Essay on “La crise de l'esprit” in 1919 by which he addressed the crisis of the European mind he depicted the Eastern part of the Mediterreanean Sea as a ‘sort of pré-Europe'. For centuries the Mediterranean Sea has been a space of transcultural exchange. Today we face the Mediterranean Sea as a mass grave for thousands of refugees aiming for Europe where they hope to find better living conditions. Europe, however, closes its borders. The course will investigate in a historical and theoretical perspective the role of the Mediterranean Sea for the development of Europe as a cultural idea and political entity. We will read and discuss philosophical and literary texts, essays and literary works (e.g. by Homer, Ovid, Shakespeare, Goethe, Bahr, Nietzsche, Valéry, Camus, Derrida, Agamben) in order to understand better the contemporary developments – and especially the importance of the Mediterranean for the future (of) Europe. Participants’ own ideas and projects are welcome. The course directors cannot cover travel and accommodation expenses or the course fees for participants.

Students who would like to collect ECTS-Credit Points will have to give a paper.

Costs for Travel and Accommodation as well as the Course Fee in the amount of 80 Euro will not be compensated.
