In memory of Jan Vansina, one of the world’s foremost historians of Africa, the University of Wisconsin-Madison African Studies Program announces the first annual Jan Vansina Lecture. Please join us on September 21-22, 2018 to celebrate the life of the beloved professor emeritus.

Featuring Nancy Hunt, Steven Feierman, and Jacob Sabakinu Kivilu, the lecture on Friday, September 21 (4:00PM) will be followed by dinner and the opportunity to share memories of Jan (7:00PM).

In addition to the lecture and dinner, the African Studies Program will organize a symposium on various aspects of Jan’s legacy for the morning of Saturday, September 22 (9:00AM-12:00PM).

All events are free and open to the public, but registration is required.  Registrants will have the opportunity to indicate their interest in presenting at the symposium.
