Symposium 2018

Lucian Freud in Ireland

In the context of the loan of works by Lucian Freud to the Collection of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) for a five year period, IMMA Collection: Freud Project and the Department of the History of Art and Architecture (TCD) &TRIARC are undertaking a joint research programme to encourage critical investigations into the work of this important twentieth century artist.

IMMA Collection: Freud Project includes some of Freud’s most remarkable and memorable works and the project seeks to encourage new thinking about Freud’s relationship to Ireland and about the role and identity of the IMMA Collection. It will be accompanied by a full programme of research, learning programmes, artists’ commissions and related exhibitions.

IMMA Collection: Freud Project and the Department of the History of Art and Architecture (TCD)& TRIARC are jointly issuing an early call for papers from academics, critics, practitioners and postgraduate researchers, including practice-based researchers, for a symposium that will take place in the Spring of 2018.

      Freud in Ireland:

- Freud’s time in Ireland

- Freud on Irish art and artists

- Freud and WB and Jack Yeats

- Freud and modernism in Ireland

      Freud and the contemporary

      Freud and the historical

      Freud and portraiture

      Freud and the body

      Freud and the psychological

      Freud / Bacon / Auerbach

      Freud and legacy

      Freud and the role of painting

      The artist’s gaze

      The artist and subject

      Critical receptions of Freud

Paper contributions should be 20 minutes maximum.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              

A selection of papers may be compiled into an online publication.

To make a proposal please send:

  •          an abstract with title – max 250 words
  •          a short biography which includes: presenter’s name, institutional affiliation / research project (if relevant) and contact details - max 200 words
