The Center for International and European Studies (CIES) at Kadir Has University will hold a 3-day American Studies Seminar titled “America at Home and Abroad” which focuses on broadly addressing the themes of politics, arts and culture, and foreign policy via a series of interactive lectures, panel discussions, and a film showing on the United States today.

The need to maintain a strong interest in relations between Turkey and the United States cannot be overstated. The two countries need to understand each other better. An understanding of the US in Turkey is a must as the US and the West are more often than not depicted in “us versus them” terms given the fluidity of the international order today. Thus, the need to learn the US in terms of how its institutions and democracy function and how the arts and cultural scene such as literature, film, and art contribute to the understanding of the evolution of the country in terms of the values that shape it and make it tick. Lost in the “who is on my side” approach is that both countries share common values. The CIES aims to create opportunities to learn about US politics, arts and culture, and foreign policy through the prism of the shared values of democracy between the two countries and to raise awareness on how shared values reinforce US-Turkey relations.

This American Studies Seminar is co-sponsored by the U.S. Consulate General, Istanbul.
