The MA in Design History & Material Culture (DHMC) is a taught postgraduate programme running over 2 years (p/t) or 1 year (f/t) that is unique in Ireland in its focus on objects, buildings, spaces and systems in their historic and contemporary contexts. Students are from a wide range of backgrounds including fine art and design practice, journalism, theatre, film, publishing, anthropology, archaeology, architecture and history of art.

As well as following personal research interests DHMC students work with local and national institutions on a series of collaborative projects. In the recent past, while on the MA students have produced publications, curated exhibitions and organised conferences. We also host a lively public programme of seminars/symposia/workshops. Recent and upcoming events include the Design and Film symposium with the Dublin International Film Festival, a seminar with the master banner maker Ed Hall (May 3rd), an exhibition of DHMC research on Dublin and material culture (opens May 22) and a collaboration with the new Museum of Literature in Ireland on writing about objects (2018-19).

Located in the creative environment of an art and design school, the programme gives opportunities to work closely with postgraduate practitioners in classes and on live projects.
