Migration Processes and Cultural Transfers. Polish and German Contexts
as part of the

Klaus Zernack Colloquium

The Klaus Zernack Colloquium is a monthly series of lectures organised by the Centre for Historical Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CBH PAN), and headed by Prof. Michael G. Müller (Institute for History of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg), Prof. Robert Traba (CBH PAN) and Prof. Igor Kąkolewski (CBH PAN). The colloquium aims at providing a platform for historians and scholars of related academic disciplines to discuss their recent research projects.

In 2017/2018, the Klaus Zernack Colloquium will be focusing on Polish and German migration experiences. There already is a substantial corpus of literature on the reasons and course of migrations, as well as on the topic of integration of migrants. During our discussions, we would like to take up results from the research on the history of relations between different nations and ethnic groups as devised by Klaus Zernack. We are convinced that an interdisciplinary and multilateral approach holds special potential for migration research. For this reason, we invite representatives of different fields of humanities and social sciences working on this subject to submit their paper proposals.

Amongst the many important topics in this research field, we would like to direct the focus of our discussions to the following problems, especially:

  • the possibilities and willingness of migrants to integrate into their new situation;
  • the willingness and opportunities for migrants to cultivate their own culture, language and religion;
  • the attitude of the local population to the newcomers, as well as that of the migrants to the locals, and to their own country of origin.

Instead of defining specific waves of migration and their distinctive features, or indicating the sources of migration itself, we intend to reflect the impact migration had and still has on social and cultural changes both in the host society and in the society of origin. In other words, we would like to explore to what extent migration leads to cultural transfers and cultural exchange. How often and for what purpose did/do migrants maintain contact with their homeland? Did/do they also contribute to the cultural transfer into their country of origin? Given that these are only some sample questions, we would like to encourage interested scholars to expand this catalog in their paper proposals.

With regards to the above-mentioned, we do not set any particular time-frame. We welcome paper proposals from researchers working on different eras and disciplines. We also kindly invite scholars who deal with the issue of re-migration and the relations between different groups of migrants.

Abstracts in German (1,500 characters), along with a brief academic CV, contact information, and academic affiliation should be submitted by 28 February 2017 to the e-mail address: malgorzata.stolarska-fronia@cbh.pan.pl (project coordination: Dr. Malgorzata Stolarska-Fronia).

Migrationsprozesse und Kulturtransfer. Deutsche und polnische Kontexte

im Rahmen des

Klaus Zernack Colloquiums

  • die Möglichkeiten und Bereitschaft der Migrantinnen und Migranten, sich in die neue Situation zu integrieren;
  • ihr Wille und die Möglichkeit zur Pflege der eigenen Kultur, Sprache und Konfession;

Februar 2017 per Email an: malgorzata.stolarska-fronia@cbh.pan.pl (Koordination: Dr. Małgorzata Stolarska-Fronia).
