The Northeast Popular/American Culture Society (NEPCA) is seeking paper proposals on the intersections between travel, tourism, regional identity and culture for its annual conference, which will convene at UMass Amherst the weekend of October 27-28, 2017.
Possible topics include:
- How regions are portrayed on television, movies, and song
- Regional tropes in literature
- Is regionalism a contributing factor in the "disuniting" of the United States?
- Myth and reality is regional identity
- Tourism and social class
- Gender and/or ethnic identity and tourism
- Branding and regional identity
- Tourism as an industry
- Destination tourism
The above are simply ideas, so please feel free to propose ideas of your own. Proposals do not need to have Northeast themes. nor do they have to be restricted to topics relating to the United States.
Special panel:
Papers are also being solicited for a special panel titled "Is There a Northeast Identity?" We hope to explore the question of what it means to be from New England and/or New York State.
