The program, entitled “Epistemologies of Aesthetic Practices,” situated at the Collegium Helveticum, is a collaborative project including the ETH Zurich, University of Zurich, and the Zurich University of the Arts. Funded by SwissUniversities it develops a cooperative doctoral degree program between universities and colleges of higher education, focusing on aesthetic research. The program collects a total of 8 university teachers from the three institutions involved (Andreas Kilcher, Philip Ursprung; Elisabeth Bronfen, Fabienne Liptay, Sylvia Sasse; Florian Dombois, Dieter Mersch, Germán Toro-Pérez). The laboratory is based in Zurich.

The research laboratory offers interested doctoral students in the field of aesthetics, artistic practice and its epistemology in the broadest sense (including, among other fields, philosophy of art, composition, music theory and performance practice, theatre, dance, exhibition, film, visual arts, media art, performance, installation, art education, design, design philosophy, etc.) a forum to discuss and complete their doctoral thesis.

The structured program includes colloquia, workshops, lecture series, retreats, and a summer school. Moreover, it develops new formats for transdisciplinary works. The participating universities and university teachers guarantee in particular the mentoring of projects by graduates of technical universities. Note that neither stipends nor paid positions can be offered as part of the program. SwissUniversities’ financial support of the program is rather intended to provide a budget for the infrastructure and activities of the laboratory which is located at the Collegium Helveticum.
