For decades, the Newberry has sponsored scholarly seminars on a wide range of topics. Each seminar forms an academic community where participants are free to wrestle with new ideas and give feedback, often in a workshop format. The scholarly seminars are organized in cooperation with Chicago-area university departments and institutes. Seminar organizers solicit potential papers each spring for the coming academic year, seeking papers that use new methods, unveil archival discoveries, or need feedback in preparation for publication. Faculty, graduate students, and the public are welcome to attend. Most seminars require the reading in advance of a pre-circulated paper.
