OVERVIEW:

Gilles Campagnolo will look at the historical and contemporary dimensions of Chinese liberalism, exploring China’s economic development in a comparative context. In particular, in the volume he edited Liberalism and Chinese Economic Development (2016, London & NYC: Routledge) the differences from the Western model are explored, and more specifically, the relationship between Chinese economic thought and European traditions, assessing China’s economic development at both a macro and a micro level.

Are free-trade and capitalistic economic developments sustainable without other types of liberal developments? Is the idea that political liberties and economic freedom go together merely a Western ideology?

Campagnolo also considers China in relationship with its neighbors since Japan is included in the European Union program on “Liberalism In Between Europe And China, LIBEAC” (or LIBEralism for Action since this acronym may go as well) which supported this research.

SPEAKER:

A full research professor at the French Center for Scientific Research/ Aix-Marseilles School of Economics, France and a Visiting Professor at Hokkaido University, Japan, Campagnolo heads the Network of European Union elite network program LIBEAC uniting partners from France, Great-Britain, Italy, Czech Republic, Japan (Hokkaido U.) and China (Beijing U. and Tsinghua U.)

After studying at Paris Ecole Normale Supérieure,  Harvard (Augustus Clifford Tower Fellow) and Tokyo University, he taught philosophy and economics at Paris Sorbonne University, Aix-Marseilles University (France), was a special student (Monbukagakusho) at Tokyo University, visiting assistant Professor at Nichibunken (Kyoto), visiting professor at Saitama University and Rikkyo University (Tokyo) and is regularly invited at research institutions in Japan, China and South Korea.
