Wiley Housewright Dissertation Award

The Wiley Housewright Dissertation Award is designed to recognize a single dissertation on American music for its exceptional depth, clarity, significance, and overall contribution to the field. American music is interpreted in all its historical and contemporary styles and contexts, including, but not limited to art and popular musics, the musics of ethnic groups and minorities, and the full range of activities associated with music. "America" is understood here to embrace North America (Canada, The United States, and Mexico), including Central America and the Caribbean, and aspects of its cultures elsewhere in the world.

The Award carries with it a monetary prize as well as a citation that will be presented at the national conference each spring. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: June 1, 2018

 

Irving Lowens Article Award

Irving Lowens' research and writing in American music not only form a cornerstone for American music history, but also are largely responsible for making the study of American music a respected and thriving area in musicology today. As the principal founder of the Sonneck Society (now the Society for American Music) and its first president from 1974 to 1981, Irving Lowens has often been regarded as the guiding spirit for the Society. During his remarkable career he became distinguished in music criticism, musicology, and music librarianship. In his positions as music critic for the Washington Star (1953-1977), music reference librarian at the Library of Congress (1962-1966), and as Dean at the Peabody Conservatory of Music (1977-1982), he served in turn the public, the scholar, and the music student. The Irving Lowens Article Award commemorates this remarkable man and his contributions to the study of American music.

This award consists of a plaque and cash award given annually for the article that makes an outstanding contribution to American music studies.

The Society for American Music invites scholars to submit books published in the year 2017 for consideration for the Irving Lowens Book Award. The Society annually awards this prize to the book judged as the best in the field of American music. Any book on American music with a year 2017 imprint is eligible.

We define the term “American music” in its broadest, most inclusive sense. We view it as composed of the music of all of North America (Canada, USA, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean) in its historical and contemporary styles and contexts, including art and popular cultures, ethnic groups and minorities, immigrant composers, performers, and communities, along with American music’s ramifications on cultures elsewhere in the world.

The Lowens Book Award represents one of our most prestigious honors and carries with it a monetary prize as well as a citation that will be presented at the annual national conference each spring. Margery Lowens Dissertation Research Fellowship

The Margery Lowens Dissertation Research Fellowship honors Margery Morgan Lowens, a founding member of the Sonneck Society for American Music, who played a pivotal role in its growth through her service, support, commitment, and philanthropy. Margery Lowens served as the society’s first vice-president while her husband, Irving Lowens, also a founder of our society, served as president. Adrienne Fried Block Fellowship

This fellowship, endowed in honor of Adrienne Fried Block, shall be given to support scholarly research leading to publication on topics that illuminate musical life in large urban communities. Paul Charosh Independent Scholar Fellowship

Paul Charosh is a retired member of both the Sociology and Computer Science Departments of Brooklyn College (CUNY) with a scholarly interest in the social history of American music beginning in the mid-nineteenth century. Though he does not possess formal music-related credentials, his articles have appeared in American Music and other scholarly publications. This award seeks to encourage others to do independent work as music scholars, even if their formal training and careers may have evolved elsewhere. 

 

The Paul Charosh Independent Scholar Fellowship is intended to foster research by independent scholars, and to encourage their participation in Society conferences. For purposes of this award, an “independent scholar” is someone who does not teach at an institution of higher learning, or who does so with a non-renewable contract of one year or less. Applicants are not required to hold any particular degree or certification. The Edward T. Cone Fellowship recognizes Edward T. Cone's contributions to American music as a composer, musicologist, and theorist. A member of Princeton University's faculty from 1946 to 1985, Cone's numerous compositions include a symphony and works for chorus, piano, voice, orchestra, and chamber ensembles. From 1979 to 1985 he also held the position of the Andrew D. White Professor-at-Large at Cornell University. Cone authored two of the twentieth-century's most influential books on Western music: Music Form and Musical Performance (1968) and The Composer's Voice (1974)

 

The Edward T. Cone Fellowship is awarded competitively to scholars at any phase of their careers whose research interest is focused on the history, creation, and analysis of American concert music, ranging from solo or chamber music to symphonic works. The Fellowship may support research expenses, including but not limited to travel expenses, books, and media resources. Richard Crawford Fellowship 

This Fellowship honors Richard Crawford, the innovative and widely influential historian of American music, two-time winner of the society’s Lowens Book Award, recipient of the society’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and founding editor-in-chief of Music of the United States of America <https://sites.google.com/a/umich.edu/musa/home> (MUSA) – a series of scholarly editions representing the full range of genres and idioms in American music.

This fellowship supports research conducted by contracted MUSA volume editors. It funds research expenses involved in the preparation of critical editions, including but not limited to travel expenses, lodging, books, and media resources. The maximum award is $1,000. John and Roberta Graziano Fellowship

Charles Hamm Fellowship 

This fellowship honors Charles Hamm and his profound contributions to the study of American music and popular music. He won the society’s inaugural Lowens Book Award for Music in the New World (1983) and also worked closely on 19th-century popular song, Irving Berlin, and George Gershwin. In 2002, he received the society’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

This fellowship is given annually to support a one-week research residency at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Library and Archives <http://library.rockhall.com/home> facility on the campus of Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. The fellowship program is co-sponsored by SAM and the Center for Popular Music Studies at Case Western Reserve University. Awarded competitively to scholars at any phase of their careers, the fellowship is designed to support expenses (such as travel, lodging, and duplication) associated with the residency. Hampsong Education Fellowship in American Song 

The Hampsong Education Fellowship in American Song is awarded competitively to educators at any phase of their careers who wish to help students and the general public understand American history and culture through the medium of song, by developing curricular or co-curricular projects that utilize materials from the Song of America database <http://songofamerica.net/> and Voices Across Time <http://voices.pitt.edu/>, as well as other primary resources in American song. Song of America is an online database created by the Hampsong Foundation for the purpose of understanding American culture through classic song; Voices Across Time is a resource guide created by the Society for American Music and the University of Pittsburgh Center for American Music, offering materials and strategies for using historic American songs as primary sources for studying American history and literature.

Educators in the humanities and social sciences (including but not limited to music history, English literature and poetry, American history, and American studies) are encouraged to apply. Teachers who have completed Voices Across Time training are particularly encouraged to apply for funding to develop follow-up projects that could involve performance or collaborative ventures with others. The term “educators” is meant to include K-12 teachers, home-schoolers, graduate students in education programs, college and university professors, museum specialists, performers, and others who educate special audiences and the general public about song in American history and culture.

The Fellowship (up to $1,000) may support the development of print and / or online curricular resources, performances with associated curricular resources, collaborative ventures that include non-musicians or non-music scholars and educators, lecture-recitals, illustrated performances or other innovative approaches, as long as the focus of the project is in keeping with the related goals of Voices Across Time and Song of America. http://www.american-music.org/awards/HampsongFellowship.php DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: November 1, 2018

 

Judith McCulloh Fellowship

This fellowship honors the achievements of Judith McCulloh as a scholar, folklorist, editor, and folk arts advocate. She created and championed the "Music in American Life" series renowned for its wide embrace of popular, folk, and concert musics and the "Folklore in Society" series during her prolific tenure at the University of Illinois Press. She received, among numerous honors, the Bess Lomax Hawes National Heritage Fellowship and the Society for American Music Distinguished Service Award. This fellowship is given annually to support research on a folk-based music culture of the Americas. Awarded competitively to scholars at any phase of their careers, the fellowship is designed to support expenses (such as travel, lodging, and duplication) associated with residency at a research center or archive, or with fieldwork. Potential research center sites include the Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, where McCulloh worked extensively, and other repositories that reflect her broad interests in folk music. Anne Dhu McLucas Fellowship

This fellowship recognizes Anne Dhu McLucas's contributions to American music studies and her selfless service to the Society, including her tenure as President. She was a brilliant polymath with wide-ranging interests in all things musical, a wonderful teacher, a gifted and supportive mentor, and a path-breaking scholar. The fellowship honors Prof. McLucas's primary areas of scholarly interest by providing support to a graduate student conducting research (archival or fieldwork) on traditional music (music in the oral tradition) or Native American/First Nation music. The Fellowship may support research expenses, including but not limited to travel expenses, lodging, media resources, and duplication expenses. The maximum award for the 2018 application year is $2,000. Wayne Shirley Research Fellowship

This fellowship honors the career of Wayne Shirley, who spent thirty-seven years as a reference librarian and then music specialist in the Music Division at the Library of Congress, during which time he assisted and mentored generations of scholars. He is also a renowned music editor.

The fellowship is given annually to support a short-term research residency at the Library of Congress on any topic relating to musics of the Americas. Awarded competitively to scholars at any phase of their careers, the fellowship is designed to support expenses (such as travel, lodging, and duplication) associated with residency at the library. Eileen Southern Fellowship 

This Fellowship honors Eileen Southern, the pioneering historian of African-American music, whose book Music of Black Americans: A History (1971) and journal The Black Perspective in Music, which she edited with her husband Joseph Southern, helped to ground and propel the study of black music history. She received, among many other honors, the National Humanities Medal and our society's Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Eileen Southern Fellowship is awarded competitively to scholars at any phase of their careers in support of research on music of the African diaspora in the Americas. The fellowship may support research expenses for archival or ethnographic research, including but not limited to travel expenses, lodging, books, and media resources. Virgil Thomson Fellowship 

The Virgil Thomson Fellowship is awarded competitively to scholars at any phase of their careers whose research interest is focused on the history, creation, and analysis of American music on stage and screen, including opera. The Fellowship may support research expenses, including but not limited to travel expenses, books, and media resources. Judith Tick Fellowship

Judith Tick, the Matthews Distinguished University Professor of Music History at Northeastern University in Boston, has been a leading figure in American music scholarship for several decades, having made major contributions through her books, articles, and public presentations, as well as through teaching and outstanding service to the field of musicology. A permanent research endowment was established in her honor by the Society for American Music, the premiere professional organization in her areas of greatest interest.

This fellowship shall be given to support scholarly research leading to publication on musical topics involving Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Preference will be given to projects that resonate with the primary research areas that have been the focus of Prof. Tick’s distinguished career, including women’s music-making across time and musical genres; musical biography; and source studies in American music. The fellowship is awarded competitively to scholars at any phase of their careers. The fellowship may support research expenses for archival or ethnographic research, including but not limited to travel expenses, books, and media resources. Robert Walser and Susan McClary Fellowship

Intended to diversify the field of scholars working on American music, the Robert Walser and Susan McClary Fellowship is awarded to an outstanding Ph.D. candidate at a U.S. or Canadian university who is a member of a historically underrepresented group in the field. Applications are especially welcome from African Americans, Native Americans, Native Pacific Islanders, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans, and, from Canada, aboriginal peoples and visible minorities (as defined by Canadian legislation). The Society embraces and promotes diversity of race, ethnicity, class, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, national origin, and religion, among other expressions, among our membership and throughout all Society activities. The award recognizes academic achievement and future promise in the study of American music. The fellowship, granted annually, provides a six-month stipend of $11,000. Mark Tucker Award

Given for an Outstanding Student Paper Presented at the Annual SAM ConferenceMark Tucker, Vice President of the Society for American Music at the time of his death in December 2000, is known to most SAM members as a leading jazz scholar. His Ellington: The Early Years and The Duke Ellington Reader are landmarks in Ellington scholarship and models of musical biography. But Mark was deeply interested in many aspects of American music besides jazz. He wrote papers, participated in performances, and published pieces dealing with topics as diverse as Charles Ives's love of the Adirondacks, 19th-century parlor song, the compositions of Alec Wilder, the musical plays of Braham, Harrigan, and Hart, and hip-hop.

Recognizing Mark's gift for nurturing and inspiring his own students and the high value he placed on skillful and communicative scholarly writing, and wishing to honor his memory, the Board of the Society for American Music has established the Mark Tucker Award, to be presented at the Business Meeting of the annual SAM conference to a student who has written an outstanding paper for delivery at that conference. The recipient of the award, which consists of a modest amount of cash and a more significant amount of recognition, will be decided before the conference by a committee appointed annually.

Students who will be reading individual papers or presenting a poster are eligible for the Mark Tucker Award. It is asked that all those who wish to be considered for the award submit their materials following the same guidelines: a research paper that fits within the time slot of the conference's twenty-minute individual paper presentation limit (approximately ten double-spaced pages).

Cambridge University Press AwardInternational scholars who have had papers or posters accepted for the annual meeting may compete for this conference paper award. "International Scholars" are defined as presenters who hold an institutional affiliation and/or principal residence outside the United States. A presenter wishing to be considered for the award must submit his or her paper (or, for a poster, the equivalent of a 20-minute paper) and accompanying audio-visual material to the award committee chair by a deadline set by the chair.

The award will consist of a substantial amount of books, chosen by the winner, from the Cambridge University Press catalog. The award winner will be announced at the Society's annual meeting. All applicants must be members of the Society for American Music.

This paper award is designed for non-students. (International students may submit materials for the Mark Tucker Award <http://www.american-music.org/awards/TuckerAward.php>.) The deadline for submissions is three weeks (21 calendar days) in advance of the first day of the annual conference.
