“Nostalgia and Consumer Culture in the Twentieth Century”

 

42nd Annual Meeting of the Social Science History Association (SSHA)

Montreal, Quebec; November 2-5, 2017

 

The Theme of the 42nd Annual SSHA Meeting is “Changing Social Connections in Time and Space.”  With that in mind, this panel is seeking to bring together scholars who are working on topics that explore Nostalgia and Consumer Culture in the Twentieth Century.  This panel welcomes papers that deal broadly with the themes of consumption and nostalgia and cover a wide range of geographic regions. Some possible topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Food and foodways
  • Industrialization and corporate branding
  • Marketing and advertising
  • Cultural or religious festivals
  • Sports and sports fandom
  • Toys, leisure, and play
  • Holiday traditions and celebrations
  • Multigenerational childhood
  • Public history, museums, and monuments
  • Travel and tourism
  • Space and place
  • Memory
