CALL FOR PAPERS
Deadline: 15 February 2017
WORKSHOP ON ECONOMIC HISTORY, GROWTH, AND DEVELOPMENT IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE
The Faculty of Theoretical and Applied Economics at the Bucharest University of Economic Studies
and the Faculty of History at University of Bucharest
Bucharest, 19-20 May 2017
Keynote speakers:
Sheilagh Ogilvie (Cambridge University)
Bogdan Murgescu (University of Bucharest)
One of the biggest challenges in economic history is to account for present-day differences in economic performances across countries and regions. While Western Europe has been the subject of many studies, Eastern Europe has not been as thoroughly analysed, and the root causes of the current economic situation vis-a-vis that in the West are still not fully understood. Given their tumultuous and complex histories, as well as their untapped sources of historical data, crucial insights can be drawn from examining the various development paths of Central, East, and Southeast Europe against those of Western Europe.
The WEast workshop in Bucharest will offer an opportunity to share and discuss ideas and research pertaining to these and related matters. The prime objective of the WEast workshop is to facilitate communication between scholars from the ‘East’ and the ‘West’ working in the broad realm of Eastern European economic and social history in order to share their research and to encourage exchange of knowledge about available sources of data and state-of-the art methodologies.
Organizers from the Department of Theoretical and Applied Economics of the Bucharest University of Economic Studies/Academia de Studii Economice din București (ASE) and from the Faculty of History of the University of Bucharest/Universitatea București (UB) thus invite both graduate students and more established researchers to submit their scientific work. We welcome research dealing with more general matters as well as less widely-known aspects of the economic and social history of Central, East, and Southeast Europe.
Scholars wishing to participate should email an extended abstract (1-2 pages) along with a short academic CV to Grigore Piroșcă (grigore.pirosca@economie.ase.ro) and Cristina Victoria Radu (cvr@sam.sdu.dk) no later than 15 February 2017. Selected participants will be informed soon after. There is no participation fee for this meeting, but participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation. University accommodation in single room dorms is available for 20 euros per night. Young scholars whose universities are unable to cover travel expenses can apply for a small WEast travel allowance. Invitation to the workshop includes free catering and a trip to the mountain resort of Sinaia in Prahova County for a visit to Peleș Castle. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Cristina Victoria Radu (cvr@sam.sdu.dk).
