The principal aim of the conference is to overcome a Eurocentric approach to Atlantic history that considers it as a mere history of the Europeans overseas empires. Instead, the focus of the debate will be on the active role played by Native Americans and Africans in shaping transformations of the period.

To trace the origins of a variety of Atlantic/American societies, papers will show how individual and dynamic actions of appropriation and innovation allowed the emergence of new identities, which were in permanent (re)construction.
