CALL FOR CHAPTERS:

FESTIVALS AND FAIRS IN POPULAR CULTURE

Festivals and fairs celebrate agricultural communities, provide an economic boost for cities, and express ethnic pride.  They encourage visitors to learn about heritage and develop respect for the natural world. Visitors by the thousands attend state fairs, pierogi festivals, garlic festivals, sports festivals, tulip festivals, music festivals, moonshine festivals, Russian festivals, Greek festivals, Renaissance fairs, Octoberfest, and Burning Man.  The State of Michigan alone has 56 festivals covering topics from bats to polka.

However, there is a dearth of scholarly literature on festivals and fairs. This volume aims to remedy that gap. Please consider submitting a chapter proposal. Possible themes may include:

  • The consumption and reception of festivals and fairs
  • The evolution of displays
  • The relationship between festivals and fairs and government policy
  • Festivals and fairs as narratives of progress
  • Festivals and fairs as narratives of nationalism
  • Popular culture and performance
  • Festivals and heritage tourism
  • Ethnography and vernacular events
  • Festivals and people in the diaspora
  • The role of festivals and fairs in establishing representational frameworks
  • Articulating the relationship between high and popular culture
  • The construction and performance of identity
  • The commodification of culture

Submissions should include a provisional title, a 200-word abstract, and a 100-word biographical note. Abstract submissions are due by November 1, 206.  First drafts will be due on April 15, 2017.
