History Studies and Canik Municipality of Turkey welcome submissions for the Seventh Annual Canik Symposium. The theme of this year's symposium is "Migration from Past to Present". Migrations have shaped the world we live in today. While the migration of Eastern European tribes changed Europe's ethnic structure in the late antiquity, migrations to the United States led to the establishment of new states on this continent and also helped Europe's development. Turkish migration from their homeland in Central Asia to Anatolia helped them discover new cultures. The Turkish migration especially to the Balkans during the Ottoman period prepared the ground for a common culture of Balkan nations and Turkey. The migration of Muslim population from the Balkans to Anatolia from the last quarter of nineteenth century to the last quarter of the twentieth century has become one of the determining factors in the formation of Turkey’s demographic and cultural structure. Emerging patterns of new migrations in the early twenty first century, has brought a renewed interest on immigration.  Understanding modern patterns of migration requires an interdiciplinary approach. It is the goal of this symposium to analyze not only the past and future of migration with an interdiciplinary perspective but also to forecast what today's migration patterns can bring in the near future.
