Texas A&M University at Galveston Conference on Inclusion & Diversity in Higher Education

Keynote Speakers:

Dr. Sahar Aziz, Associate Professor, Texas A & M School of Law

Professor Aziz's scholarship sits at the intersection of national security and civil rights law with a focus on how post-9/11 policies adversely impact racial, ethnic, and religious minorities. Dr. Aziz was named as a 2015 Emerging Scholar by Diverse Issues in Higher Education and her writing has appeared in the New York Times and The Huffington Post.

Mr. Dave Zirin, Sports Editor, The Nation and Host of Sirius/XM Radio's Edge of Sports 

Mr. Zirin is the author of eight books exploring the politics of sports. His most recent work is Brazil's Dance with the Devil: The World Cup, The Olympics, and the Struggle for Democracy (Haymarket 2014).  In 2015, Mr. Zirin won the New York Press Club Award for Sports Journalism and Northeastern University School of Journalism's "Excellence in Sports Journalism" Award.

We invite students, faculty, diversity officers, student life personnel, practitioners, early and advanced professionals from a variety of institutions and disciplines to propose individual papers, panels and posters including, but certainly not limited to the following topics:

  • Supporting LBTQA campus community members
  • Engaging in and sustaining dialogues about inclusion and diversity 
  • Engaging faculty in promoting diversity and inclusion
  • Supporting veterans within the campus community
  • Developing high impact practices and student success
  • Supporting and developing first-generation college students
  • Intersectional identities within the campus community
  • Social media, inclusion and diversity 
  • Building and sustaining cross cultural alliances on campus
  • Expanding opportunities for educational access and success by traditionally underrepresented populations
  • Educating about and assessing cultural competencies
  • Supporting underrepresented populations in the sciences
  • Mentoring and underrepresented populations
  • Mechanics of institutionalizing inclusion and diversity
  • Peer facilitators and inclusion and diversity initiatives
  • University core curricula, diversity and inclusion
  • Civility and civil discourse in higher education
  • Higher Education’s role in confronting ableism, homophobia, sexism, and racism

Please submit abstracts of 300 words along with a short bio to the conference organizers, Dr. Carol Bunch Davis and Dr. JoAnn DiGeorgio-Lutz at davisc@tamug.edu by October 1, 2016. If you are interested in chairing a session, please indicate your interest in your email. Individual presentations should be no longer than 15 minutes and full panel proposals should be no longer than 60 minutes.
