The V Intensive Summer Course "Arabic Codicology: the Islamic Manuscript Heritage in the El Escorial Collection", co-organised by the European Research Commission Project SICLE ("Saadian Intellectual and Cultural Life", ERC 670628) and the Fundación General de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, will take place from 2 to 6 of July 2018 in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid, Spain.
It aims to provide the students with the basic codicological knowledge and the research procedures they will need when studying and analysing Arabic manuscripts. The attendees will benefit from the collaboration which has been set up with the Royal Library of the El Escorial Monastery, where the practical training will be organized, accessing the most important collection of Arabic manuscripts in Spain and one of the most relevant in Europe.
The course will be taught by the specialist of Arabic manuscripts, the professors François Déroche (Collège de France, PSL, Paris) and Nuria Martínez de Castilla (École Pratique des Hautes Études, PSL, Paris), also director of the course.

Pre-registration is compulsory. Please send a one-page CV, a motivation letter of approximately 1000 to 1500 words and a completed application form to firstname.lastname@example.org before April 15th, 2018. These documents will be taken into account during the selection process.
Please note that, due to the use of original manuscripts during the hands-on sessions, the number of students cannot exceed 16. The coure will be given in English in its entirely. Students have thus to be proficient in this language in order to successfully attend the course.
