I have the pleasure of inviting you to participate in the 2017 Southern Conference on Africa American Studies Inc., SCAASI, February 9 – 11, 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia.

SCAASI is an interdisciplinary professional organization dedicated to bringing together scholars from all races and creeds, who are interested in analyzing, interpreting and preserving African American History and Culture. Since its inception in the 1970’s by a small, but influential group of southern scholars the organization has grown tremendously and now includes multidisciplinary scholars and researchers from all over the US who comment on, research and generate conversations about the Black community.

The theme of the 2017 conference is “The Legacy of President Barack Obama in History, Literature, Government”.   Scholars of the Black community will have the opportunity to discuss President Obama’s impact on the Black Community and help frame the tone and terms of evaluations of how the first black president of the US will be remembered.  The conference will also explore some of the facts and fictions of Mr. Obama’s presidency as well as discussions on the current state of the African American Community.  SCAASI will also be hosting its long-running university Quiz Bowl for college students, and continues to encourage student presentations as well. This year we will be paying special tribute to Dr. Alton Hornsby, professor emeritus Morehouse college and 25 year editor of the Journal of Negro History.

We anticipate a dynamic, stimulating and non-political conference and would welcome your presence at this potentially history-making event.  We encourage you to submit a paper, sign up for a panel presentation or simply engage in what are sure to be thought-provoking discussions.

Please share this information with your colleagues and students.  Visit our webpage at and our 2016 Facebook Page Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions. We look forward to seeing you in Atlanta next February.
