Travel and Tourism in Twentieth-Century Europe
The history of tourism, which has overcome the surprising delay in the attention of contemporary historiography towards “vacation” practices, is nowadays a well-established field of research that includes a vast array of methodological approaches.
Initially, methods and concepts from economic and cultural history prevailed in mainstream tourism historiography; in recent years, political, public, and environmental history outlined the most promising research avenues.
On the basis of the latest research suggestions, the issue of Diacronie invites contributions on the history of travel and tourism in Twentieth-Century Europe.
We welcome articles that present a conceptual-methodological reflection and/or focus on either comparative or single-case studies, covering the chronological scope from the end of the Great War to the present day.
The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- the rise of mass tourism in inter-war Europe;
- battlefield tourism (1919-1939);
- domestic use of tourism to strengthening political consensus;
- tourism in the Golden age of mass consumption (1945-1975);
- agro-Politics and Agritourism;
- tourism and public diplomacy;
- tourism and environmental history;
- actors, practices and tourism policy in the bipolar world;
- tourism and gender in Modern Europe;
- relations between tourism and memory, heritage tourism.

How to send an article
Interested authors may send an abstract (maximum 1000 characters) together with a brief biography (maximum 500 characters) to the address redazione.diacronie[at]hotmail.it by 30 Mars 2018. The abstract must include the subject of the research, the methodology used and the first results. The article should be between 30.000 and 50.000 characters (spaces included) and must respect the editorial norms, which can be accessed at the following link: http://www.studistorici.com/proposte-di-contributi/.
Authors will be notified whether their proposal has been accepted or refused by 15 April. The complete article must be submitted by 30 June 2018.
Abstracts and articles may be sent in Italian, English, French, Spanish, German, Greek and Portuguese. Contributions in German, Greek and Portuguese will be translated into Italian by editorial board.
All proposals will be subjected to a double-blind peer review. Publication of this issue is scheduled for December 2018.
