CFP: "Global Arab Literature in the 21st Century: Transformations, Shifts, and Changes" (Seminar Panel)

The first seventeen years of the twenty-first century has been turbulent and traumatic for authors who identify themselves as Arabs and who write in Arabic, English, French, Dutch and German, and other languages. From 9/11, the invasion of Iraq, and the Arab uprisings to sectarianism, civil wars, and the rise of religious radicalism, all these cataclysmic events have left their marks on global Arab literature. The papers selected for this seminar will examine the new techniques Arab authors have employed to depict those events, the rise of new literary genres, and the subsequent transformation of global Arab literature. Have current authors and writers forged new literary paths? Has the literature moved beyond identity politics and diasporic entanglements? What innovative modes of writing have Arab authors adopted, or came up with, to signal their responses regarding the fallout of the Arab uprisings, the rise of sectarianism and religious fundamentalism, and terrorism in Europe and elsewhere? Have those crises given way to new literary themes, genres, and stylistic strategies? If so, what are they?

Suggested themes can be: new modes of writing about 9/11, terrorism and (post) Arab Uprisings; 2008-financial crisis, globalization and capitalism; minorities (linguistic, ethnic, religious, gendered, and sexual); rise of new genres (thrillers, sci fi, and speculative fiction); postmodernism; religion and literature; sectarianism and civil wars; the refugees' crisis; and online literature and the role of social media. Preference will be given to abstracts that examine recently published (or posted) works (i.e. post-2011). Interested participants are encouraged to submit 300-350 word proposals.

NeMLA formatting standards: Paper Title: 100 characters (including spaces); paper Abstract: 300 words
