Announcement – Studienkurs Venedig 2018 (Course Venice 2018)

Venedig und der Osten (Venice and the East)

Organizer: Deutsches Studienzentrum in Venedig

The Institute Deutsches Studienzentrum in Venedig organizes an interdisciplinary seminar from September 9th to 17th 2018 (arrival and departure day). The scientific management lies with Prof. Dr. Albrecht Berger (Byzantine Studies, Munich) and Prof. Dr. Markus Koller (Ottoman Studies, Bochum).

For many centuries Venice was Europe's most important gateway to the East, which includes both, trade and cultural influence. The relationship between Venice and the Eastern Roman Empire, which was marked by military confrontation as well as by close political networks and personal contacts, was exposed to a change of mutual influence and power over the centuries. In spite of everything, the relationship between the two powers was very close, so that one can still recognize the strong Byzantine influence on Venice.

The course is intended for fifteen students of history or neighboring subjects, in particular Byzantine and Ottoman Studies, who already have a bachelor's degree or passed intermediate examination in a master's or state graduate degree program. The following application documents are required: curriculum vitae, study record, term paper from 10 to 30 pages, if applicable also a meaningful summary of the master's or doctoral project and a short recommendation letter from a university teacher. Please send the documents until April 4th 2018 as a coherent PDF file to the coordinator dott.ssa Michaela Böhringer (m.boehringer@dszv.it). The candidates will be informed by email until the beginning of May.

The Institute Deutsches Studienzentrum in Venedig will pay for costs and bookings in simple accommodation for eight nights. On the other hand, arrival and departure must be organized and financed by the participants themselves.
