New England Regional World History Association Fall 2023 Symposium
CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS
New England Regional World History Association Fall Symposium “Ships and Seafarers in World History”
Northeast Maritime Institute, Fairhaven, MA, 28 OCT 2023
The New England Regional World History Association (NERWHA) and Tall Ships America will co-sponsor a one-day symposium, “Ships and Seafarers in World History,” on Saturday, 28 October 2023, at the Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI) in Fairhaven, MA, a short driving and walking distance from New Bedford, a nineteenth-century “global city” by virtue of its whaling. NERWHA encourages proposals for entire three-paper panels, single presentations (which the program committee will place into an appropriate panel), roundtables, and workshops regarding any aspect of seafaring from antiquity to the present considered from the perspective of world history. As defined by the World History Association, “ world history is a field created by historians and teachers who wanted to move away from an emphasis on national and regional histories toward broader cross-cultural, comparative, and global approaches.” (thewha, org)
The program committee especially seeks roundtables, workshops, and panels focused on pedagogy. Given the venue, presentations exploring the roles played by the sailors, shipmasters, and merchants of New Bedford in world history are especially welcome. Please note: all sessions run for 90 minutes. Roundtables will consist of three to five individuals, and paper panels are limited to three presentations and, if desired, one official response. Paper presenters are limited to 20 minutes and official responders to ten minutes. Likewise, roundtable members are limited to 10 minutes for initial observations. These restrictions, which chairs will enforce, are established to ensure audience participation in discussion. Further information on the symposium will be posted toward mid-May on the NERWHA website . Questions may also be addressed to the association’s Secretary, A. J. Andrea, at aandrea@uvm.edu. Please do not send inquiries or proposals (see below) to NERWHA’s gmail address.
All proposals should consist of no more than 300 words, be accompanied by a one-page CV, and placed into a single Word document. Within those 300 words there should be a clear indication of the presentation’s scholarly or pedagogical value. When ready for submission, the document should be sent to the Secretary as an email attachment. Acceptances will be on a rolling basis. The deadline for proposals is 31 August 2023.
