The American Cultures Workshop at the University of Sydney invites paper proposals for 2018 from scholars across Australia, Asia, New Zealand, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Indian Ocean Basin.

Beginning in March 2018, the American Cultures Workshop will meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 5:30-7:00pm at the University of Sydney. One workshop a month will feature a scholar from the Sydney metropolitan region; the other will feature a scholar from the broader Pacific and Indian Ocean Basins. The workshop will provide partial funding to help defray travel expenses for scholars coming from outside of the Sydney region. In addition, child care can be provided with prior arrangement.

The workshop provides an interdisciplinary and academically rigorous setting for developing new pieces of scholarly work in the field of American Studies, broadly defined. Papers should be in-progress drafts of articles or chapters (usually 6000-10000 words), not pieces that have already been accepted for publication. They may come from any discipline, but should be accessible to scholars outside of the presenter’s home discipline. The papers are pre-circulated a week in advance to workshop participants—including historians, literary scholars, political scientists, media studies scholars, urban planners, filmmakers, and more—and receive close, critical, and collegial attention at the workshop. Presenters are also invited to attend a dinner after the workshop.

To apply to present, please send a 300-word paper abstract, a brief scholarly biography, and a list of ideal dates by February 28, 2018 to americanculturesworkshop@gmail.com
