Southern Historical Association Junior Scholars Workshop
Greetings from the Southern Historical Association’s Junior Scholars Workshop! We cordially invite you to attend the last workshop installment for this academic year featuring Dr. Amanda Kleintop of Elon University. The Junior Scholars Workshop is designed to encourage advanced graduate students and recent graduates in the field of southern history by providing an opportunity to share their work with and receive constructive feedback from senior historians. Now in its second year, attendees of the Junior Scholars Workshops participate in new and diverse scholarly research discussions in southern history. This year’s workshops have included robust dialogue on a range of topics including black POWs in the Civil War, slavery and resistance during the American Revolution, black agrarianism in the early 20th century, 19th century religious thought, and World War I mobilizations. This month’s workshop will cover denying compensation to enslavers. Meeting on the third Thursday of each month via zoom, the recorded sessions also serve as a space for SHA members to connect outside of the annual meeting and learn about emerging scholarship.
April’s meeting will take place Thursday, April 20th from 4-5 EST. Dr. Kleintop will present the introductory chapter entitled, "Who Should Pay for Emancipation?", which is part of a larger manuscript work, The Balance of Freedom: Abolishing Property Rights in People in the US Civil War and American Memory. Dr. W. Caleb McDaniel (Rice University) and Dr. Michael Vorenburg (Brown University) will offer comments.
Interested attendees should complete this short google form (https://forms.gle/zbm1yM1f6aAFfHKKA) to receive email announcements of upcoming workshops, as well as the pre-circulated paper about a week ahead of the meeting. Attendees will also receive the zoom link by signing up.
