Dear colleagues

The Istanbul Policy Center–Sabanci University–Stiftung Mercator Initiative invites doctoral and early career researchers as well as visual artists working on questions of vulnerability and resilience in the context of migrant and refugee lives in the MENA, Turkey, and Southeastern Europe to submit abstracts for the conference “Exploring Vulnerability(ies) and Resilience: Learning from Populations on the Move,” which will be held on May 5-6 in Istanbul. The conference aims to move beyond a binary conceptualization of vulnerability and resilience by discussing how vulnerability, agency, and resilience are interrelated or co-produced by multiple factors, actors, practices, policies, and laws. The workshop is organized by Aslı İkizoğlu Erensu (Sabancı University), Meriç Çağlar (Central European University) and Souad Osseiran (Koç University).

Prof. Didier Fassin (Collège de France, Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) and École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris) will be delivering the keynote speech entitled ‘Neither Vulnerability, Nor Resilience: A Critical Approach to Exiles’ Experiences’.

Interested participants should submit a working title, abstract (max. 300 words), and short biography (max. 200 words) via email to vulnerability.migration.workshop@gmail.com before April 03, 2023. Please indicate in the email if you intend to participate online or in person. Physical attendance is prioritized, but online participation will also be possible. We welcome non-traditional presentation formats.

Travel and accommodation will be provided for only a select number of presenters. To apply for financial support, please fill in the financial support form
