The Department of History of Lingnan University (Hong Kong) is pleased to continue its Distinguished Speaker Series this year 2022/23. The theme this year is the history of the Pacific World. For our next seminar, we're delighted to host Prof. Ian Shin of the University of Michigan. He will be speaking on "Chinese Art and U.S. Imperial Stewardship in the Early 20th-Century Pacific World."

Abstract: Historians have described the first two decades of the 20th century as the "golden age of East Asian art collecting." How did the era's imperial dynamics shape this golden age in addition to aesthetic, financial, and spiritual considerations? In particular, what role did imperial politics play in the emergence of the United States as a premier place for the collecting and study of Chinese art? By attending not only to the individual activities of but also the interactions between elite U.S. institutions and collectors, and the ordinary Chinese who crossed oceans in search of knowledge and profits, Ian Shin (University of Michigan) shows how the concept of stewardship animated U.S. imperial ideology and practice, and in turn how they helped constitute the early 20th-century Pacific World.
