Fernand Braudel Mediterranean Folklore Graduate Student Prize

The Mediterranean Studies Section of the American Folklore Society invites submissions for the Fernand Braudel Prize for an Outstanding Student Research Paper in Mediterranean folklore with an honorarium of $500.

All subject areas and topics in folklore are considered. Historical and contemporary perspectives are welcome. Where relevant to your subject matter and perspective, your work should take into account the unique ecology and history of the region, and its rich and diverse folklore. 

Eligibility

• Graduate students in folklore or allied disciplines are eligible.

Requirements

• Your work should be based on original research, either in the field and/or bibliographic. Appendices, visual media, and other support materials are accepted but the award will be based solely on the content of your paper.
• Submissions must be in English. 
• Submissions should be a minimum of 20 pages with a maximum of 30, double-spaced, in 12pt type, 1” margins, and formatted and footnoted according to Journal of American Folklore style. https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/book/ed17/frontmatter/toc.html
• Include  a letter/email from a faculty sponsor which includes the student’s name and paper title. Letter/email from professor or sponsor must be sent separately to Joseph Sciorra (joseph.sciorra@qc.cuny.edu).
• A cover letter stating the student’s graduate status, the paper title, the date when it was researched and written, a description of the research, information on where the paper was presented or where it will be submitted for publication, and a short statement about the applicant’s background and interests. Previously published papers are not accepted for consideration.
• To facilitate blind review, include the paper title, but please remove the author’s name and metadata from the paper itself before submission. 
• Electronic submissions are required, sent as Word or PDF documents.
• Submissions will be under blind review by a committee of three who are members of the American Folklore Society and the Mediterranean Section. 
• Only one submission per person and previous winners are not eligible.
• The winner will be notified via email on or near August 15. If the winner attends the AFS annual meeting, the winner should attend the Mediterranean Section meeting where the winner will be formally announced and introduced. The winner will also be announced in the AFS newsletter.

• The deadline for submissions is midnight: July 1, 2023.

• All pertinent materials submitted should be labeled in the subject line as “Mediterranean Section Prize submission”
