Artistic practice, academic discourse: Race, migration and lived experience in German cultural studies (GSA Panel Submission 2023)

German Studies Association 47th Annual Conference
Montréal, Canada, October 5-8, 2023

Organizers: Armin Langer (University of Florida) and Azadeh Sharifi (University of Toronto)

Migration has changed the German society, politics and cultural landscape profoundly. While research on migration still focused mainly on socio-economic factors, the cultural implications of migration and the intersection of artistic practice that inform methodological and theoretical framings are less examined. BIPOC and migrantized artists negotiate in their work questions of belonging and exclusion, racial and economic justice, and offer a different point of view on the current post-migrant German society.

This panel will investigate what consequences race and migration has in the field of art and culture discourses. The panel will discuss how these artists use artistic practice and decolonial aesthetics to reclaim the narratives on their bodies and identities by addressing struggles their communities face in their marginalized social position. Furthermore, the panel will critically analyze the perceptions of the intersection of art and migration in public and academic discourses and the ways in which racialized and marginalized art production is framed in Germany.

If you want to contribute with a paper to this panel, please send a 350-word abstract and short bio by March 24, 2023, to Armin Langer (alanger at ufl.edu) and Azadeh Sharifi (azadeh.sharifi at utoronto.ca). The organizers encourage submissions from members of groups underrepresented in academia. Please note that all panelists must be members of the German Studies Association.
