Call for Papers - GSA 2018 Panel: The Emotions of Youth, Their Health, and the Body in the Age of War.

Submission deadline: February 1st, 2018

For many cultures, childhood and youth are considered particularly fraught phases of life, especially during times of social or political upheaval. As the twentieth century began to unfold, youth and their emotions arguably became even more central to the thinking of nations in total war. This panel seeks to explore how emotion shaped experiences of childhood and youth as they related to health or the body during the era of the two World Wars. Of particular interest are the ways in which emotion became the valid site for regulating health and bodies and for ensuring the creation of healthy adults for the nation. How were youths expected to develop forms of healthy emotional behaviors? What was considered ideal or deviant? How did education, psychology, and other institutions frame these ideals? How were those ideals policed? How did youth respond? With the recent boom in cultural studies of emotion, we encourage papers from a wide cross-section of disciplines, as well as interdisciplinary papers in exploration of these themes.

Potential themes include but are not limited to:

The emotions of childhood, family, and growing up.

Youth, health, education, and psychiatry.

War in the 20th Century, youth, and German soldiers.

Youth, ideologies (fascism, communism, etc.), emotions, and the body.

Gendered emotion of youth.

The role of the nation or the state in advancing emotional norms.
