This academic anthology intends to bring together a diverse group of papers by scholars and social scientists that draws from varied disciplines, methods, and regions of Northeastern India – comprising the seven sisters of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, and the recently included, Sikkim. This edited collection will address three distinct yet integrally interconnected dimensions. The first one would be literatures from the Northeast belonging essentially to a polyglossic landscape, including literature in the vernacular languages of the region either in written or in oral forms; the second, a relatively new but a powerful literary terrain of literature from the Northeast in the English language. Finally, the performative and intangible aspects of cultural identity will be addressed in this course of this book, which, we believe, will be a valuable addition to the growing corpus of literary and cultural debate on Northeastern India alongside the ethnopolitan collectivism of the region.

With this background in mind, topics that could be included, but are not limited to, are:

  • Gender and sexuality (gender, body, violence, and women’s agency)
  • Folk studies (folk songs, folk art, legends, and myths)
  • Jewelry (history, art, and culture of native jewelry)
  • Language and linguistic forms and communities
  • Popular culture (cinematic studies and graphic novels)
  • Visual studies (art history and paintings)
  • Religion and theology (folk deities and regional religious philosophies)
  • Gastronomic approaches to food studies

Interested scholars are requested to send a 350-500 word abstract with 5-6 keywords, a short bio-note and the phone number through e-mail as an MS Word attachment to both the editors latest by 30 March 2023. The acceptance of the abstracts will be notified by 15 April 2023.

Completed chapters of 5,000-8,000 words will be due from the shortlisted contributors by 15 August 2023. All submissions will be subject to peer review prior to publication. For further information and abstract submission, please write to the editors:
