Fellowships are for full-time research, and scholars reside in Washington and participate in the activities of the Center throughout the fellowship period. Fellows are provided with studies and have access to the notable resources represented by the collections, the library, and the image collections of the National Gallery of Art, as well as to the Library of Congress and other research libraries and collections in the area.

Visiting Senior Fellowship Program, 2018-2019

Applications will be considered for research in the history, theory, and criticism of the visual arts of any geographical area and of any period. Proposals relating to the Center's new Initiative in African American Art and Scholarship are especially welcome. Visiting senior fellowships are intended for those who have held the PhD for five years or more at the time of application or who possess an equivalent record of professional accomplishment. The Center awards up to twelve short-term (up to 60 days) Paul Mellon and Ailsa Mellon Bruce Visiting Senior Fellowships annually. Fellows will be provided with housing in apartments near the Gallery, subject to availability.

The Center is pleased to announce the call for applications for the short-term Visiting Senior Fellowship Program. The application deadline is March 21, 2018, for the fall award period of September 1, 2018, through February 28, 2019. Applications must be made through the Center's online application system, which can be accessed through the Web page for the Visiting Senior Fellowship Program.

The fellowship is awarded without regard to age or nationality of applicants. Through its fellowship programs, the Center also seeks a diverse pool of applicants in the visual arts and especially welcomes candidates from underrepresented backgrounds.
