The incumbent is a Research Geneticist assigned to the Dairy Forage Research Unit (DFRU) of the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center (USDFRC), Madison, WI. The workstation for this position is located in USDA-ARS laboratory research facilities in Madison, WI. The incumbent serves as research team member for the DFRU and participates in a dynamic, team-based, and collaborative research program designed to address dairy forage production and sustainability goals and objectives among USDA, industry, and academic partners. The incumbent develops objectives and conducts basic and applied research efforts to improve perennial forage grasses to fit the needs of the dairy industry, provide
environmentally sound alternatives for sustainable dairy production, and explore novel, value-added uses. The incumbent will develop improved cultivars of annual grasses for the dual purpose of cover and forage, identify breeding methods to improve winter hardiness of winter annual cover crops while maximizing forage value, and identify and evaluate selection criteria for annual grass (either cool or warm season species) grown for forage and cover during the summer and fall to optimize biomass yield and forage nutritional value.
