In 2022, we lost Yingjin Zhang 張英進, Distinguished Professor of Modern Chinese Literature in the Department of Literature at the University of California, San Diego. An internationally acclaimed Chinese film scholar, Yingjin was a pioneer and made innumerable valuable contributions to the fields of cinema studies; modern Chinese studies; visual studies; transmedia studies, urban studies; and comparative literature. His groundbreaking monographs, including The City in Modern Chinese Literature and Film (1996); Cinema and Urban Culture, 1922-1943 (1999); Screening China: Critical Interventions, Cinematic Reconfigurations, and the Transnational Imaginary in Contemporary Chinese Cinema(2002); Chinese National Cinema (2004); and Cinema, Space, and Polylocality in a Globalizing China (2009), as well as his many research articles, have reconfigured our understanding and become integral components of our knowledge of modern Chinese literature and film.
