Place as Archive in 20th and 21st Century Literatures

This panel aims to explore the ways in which physical place has become archival within 20th and 21st century literatures.  One of the most obvious examples may be the ways in which place is archival in post-9/11 literatures, but this panel welcomes varied and original interpretations of place as archive.

Physical place serves to construct important narratives about our culture, thus archiving the beliefs and concerns of its inhabitants, creators, and maintainers.  This panel aims to foster discussion and scholarship on the different ways in which physical places function as archives.  Whether the physical place is a formal, public memorial or simply representative of a more familial or colloquial history, physical place remains one of the most influential examples of archive in 20th and 21st century literatures.  The goal of this panel is to identify and explore the unique ways in which physical place tells stories that are otherwise silenced, while also providing dimension to existing narratives, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of narrative.
