The Department of History at the University of Oregon invites applications for a one-year visiting assistant professor position in African American history, to begin September 16, 2022 (AY 22-23). The research field is open but the successful candidate will teach both halves of the African American history survey and advanced courses in their area of specialization. The teaching responsibility is five courses (2-2-1 on the quarter system, the same teaching load as our tenured faculty). The department is especially interested in candidates whose teaching, research, and mentorship would complement and support the Black Studies minor. The position is presumed to be in residence at the University of Oregon, but the department might consider the possibility of remote teaching if needed. The history department will assign a faculty mentor to support the successful candidate.

Duties for this position will include a course load of five regular courses per year. The appointee will conduct and publish research in an effort to maintain and enhance a national and international reputation. Advising is presently handled through the department's Undergraduate and Graduate Advisors, therefore there is no formal advising expectation. Routine advising of, and contact with, students taking courses is considered a normal part of teaching activities. The appointee will have opportunities to mentor graduate students and will be expected to serve on graduate student committees if invited. The appointee will be expected to have student contact and communication sufficient to fulfill their teaching, research, and service obligations.

The appointee will serve on the departmental committee(s). UO-wide service and community service options are also available, but not required. Sufficient office hours and administrative obligations associated with instruction, research, service, and supervision are expected.

The pay is $61,100 plus a generous benefits package.
