This travel grant was established in 2021 to facilitate and support research projects that significantly benefit from the substantial onsite use of unique, special, and archival collections within our library.

The Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections and University Archives is home to many of the Libraries' rarest materials, including manuscripts, archives, prints, and artifacts.

The Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections has particular strengths in 20th century literary, music, and performance arts, Second Wave feminism, and countercultural movements of the 1960s. It holds significant material relating to the Siege and Commune of Paris of 1870-71, the archives of the Gate Theatre of Dublin and of Chicago improvisation theater leaders Viola Spolin and David Shepherd, and extensive documentation of 20th century art and literary movements such as Dadaism, Surrealism, Futurism, and Fluxus—including archives of Dick Higgins and Charlotte Moorman.

The University Archives documents the history of Northwestern University, its students, faculty, and staff, as well as its home communities of Evanston and Chicago, Illinois. In addition, the department’s collection of institutional records and alumni manuscripts have strengths relating to politics and government, especially in Illinois, the performing arts, student activities and activism, journalism, the humanities and fine arts, science and engineering, and athletics.
