The York University History Department is thrilled to announce the annual New Frontiers Graduate Conference. It will be a hybrid conference held at the York University Keele campus as well as through Zoom on February 23-25th, 2023.
This year’s theme, aftermaths, asks scholars to reconsider historical periodization, the idea of turning points, and what we consider the “end” of events. We ask: How do scholars frame historical moments and discuss events with no clear beginning or end? How do acute and prolonged events live on in historical memory and collective memories? In what ways do these histories inform structures and systems that impact people today?
While we intend to interrogate historical discourse in this conference, we hope for it to be multi-and-interdisciplinary. We want to confront the difficulties that institutional divisions between disciplines have had on the way we research, as well as our ability to create meaningful change through academia. To that end, we will be welcoming papers from a variety of disciplines, as well as diverse methodologies. The conference will hold openings for research creation projects, creative and alternative methods, short films, interdisciplinary research, and art installations. Traditionally we encourage MAs, PhDs, and post-graduates to apply. However, this year we are also welcoming late-undergraduates, community historians, and non-professionals outside the bounds of academia with interest in this topic to apply.
We will be accepting papers on a wide-range of topics including, but not limited to:
- possibilities of myth
- questioning turning points
- confronting periodization
- notions of fluidity in gender and sexuality
- regulation of identity
- popular culture, consumerism, and modernity
- conflict and its fallout
- changing technologies
- transformations of medicine and its institutions
- afterlives of colonialism and slavery
- indigeneity and indigenous worldviews
- environmental impacts, disaster, and hope
- transnational borders and boundaries
Applicants may submit individual papers or a proposal of panels with 2-4 papers.
