Annual NIOD Lecture in Holocaust and Genocide Studies 2022
On December 1, 2022, Omar McDoom (London School of Economics) will give the Annual Lecture in Holocaust and Genocide Studies 2022 in Amsterdam. His lecture is titled ‘Elites, Emotions, and Extremism in Genocides and Mass Killings: Insights from Rwanda’.
Is genocide the product of elite calculation from above or popular pressure from below? Should we think of genocide as a rational choice or an emotional reaction? Is extremism a cause or is it a consequence of genocidal violence? Omar Shahabudin McDoom tackles these three longstanding debates in theorization on genocides and offers a fresh take using new and original evidence from the tragic events that befell Rwanda in 1994.
