CALL FOR PAPERS
"Piecing the peace together: hybridization processes and the local"
International Conference – First Edition
24, 25 July 2023, in Antananarivo, ISTRCE (University of Toamasina), Fénérive-Est – Madagascar, and online
- Context
International/external interventions implemented in local contexts have produced a rich literature on the interactions between what researchers consider to be "international" and "local" as well as on the outcomes of these encounters. Over the past decade, the study of hybridity in peace and conflict processes has become an important part of the peacebuilding literature. The (hybrid) character of institutions, the practices of the actors and the impacts of peace and conflict processes on hybridity have been studied from different disciplinary angles in the fields of development, international relations, postcolonial studies, and peacebuilding or post-conflict studies, and therefore with different objectives. What most of these researchers have in common is the tendency to focus on hybridity in the context of the international/liberal order and on reflections on hybrid practices or institutions.
This critical literature has generated important contributions on resistance, local and bottom-up approaches to peace, and the so-called "local turn" in peace. Despite these contributions, the “local” is still a vague and less understood concept. To fill this gap, Hybricon and the ISTRCE (University of Toamasina) are organizing a conference bringing together academics and policymakers. We aim at creating spaces for "south-north" and interdisciplinary discussions on the theme of the local in the academic and policy spheres.
It was originally defined in 1987 in the report "Our Common Future" of the World Commission on Environment and Development that: "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Two concepts are inherent in this: the concept of needs, and more particularly the basic needs of the most deprived, to whom the highest priority should be given, and the idea of the limitations that the state of our technology and our social organization imposes on the capacity of the environment to meet current and future needs. This situation requires good governance of available and potential resources: the best way to do these are through the serious exploitation of the fruits of scientific research.
The dissemination and publication of research results are among the major current concerns of the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, the Hybricon project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, and the University of Analanjirofo. The two universities, one in England and the other, located in the north-east coast of Madagascar, aim to contribute fully to peace and sustainable development in Madagascar and to make the results of scientific research useful and accessible through international scientific events. This international vision pushes them to collaborate more and to open up to other researchers and academic institutions in other countries. This approach consists not only of forging partnership links with various institutions but also of promoting exchange mechanisms between researchers from the Global South and the Global North.
Thus, these goals form the basis of the first edition of the Hybrid International Conference entitled "Piecing the Peace Together: Processes of Hybridization and the Local ", to be held on 24 and 25 July 2023 in Antananarivo, at the University of Analanjirofo , Fénérive-Est, Madagascar and online. This conference is co-organised by the Hybricon project and the ISTRCE (University of Toamasina). It is also co-led by a Joint Scientific Committee and Organizing Committee made up of national and international researchers.
- Research topics
The conference touches on multidisciplinary scientific fields, namely:
- Social sciences and society
- Arts and humanities
- Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences
- Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development
In view of all of this, the research results to be presented during the conference must focus on works that explore for example, the "local" in hybridization processes, the conceptualization of the local, the involvement of the local in the implementation of international and development programs, the introduction and integration of international/external standards in local contexts.
- Expected results
- Oral or poster communications
Authors choose between two forms of communications to publicly present their research results:
- Oral communication during a plenary session with an oral presentation in French or English of 15-20 minutes followed by scientific discussions;
- Communication displayed or posted during a public presentation of the results by means of an A0 poster, by an oral presentation in French or English of 05 minutes followed or not by a scientific discussion.
- Conference proceedings and publication in international journals
Once accepted by the Scientific Committee of the conference, the paper, after being presented, either orally or in poster form, will be published as conference proceedings. Relevant papers, responding to the respective editorial policies, will be selected by the Scientific Committee for publication in international scientific journals.
- Scientific article
Both forms of communication, will be the subject of articles of 3,000 – 5,000 words, have the same scientific value as assessed by the Committee.
Below the summary of the documents requested from the authors:
To apply:
The paper proposals for a 15-20 minute oral presentation or poster must include the name of the author, affiliation, title of the article, abstract of the paper (250-300 words in a Word docx or doc document. Times New Roman, Font size: 12, single spaced, 3-5 keywords), a short biography (200 words maximum) and the city where the participant lives. To be sent to the organizers before December 15, 2023
If the submission is accepted:
Choice 1: Oral communication in English or French
- 01 Powerpoint file, max. 10 slides, containing the oral presentation of the communicator, to be submitted to the organizers before 05 June 2023.
- 01 full text, in Word docx or doc version, 3,000 – 5,000 words, Times New Romans, Font size: 11, line spacing 1,5) to be sent to the organizers before 05 June 2023.
Choice 2: Communication posted or posted in English or French
- 01 PDF file, containing the poster, ready for printing in A0 format, to be given to the organizers before 05 June 2023.
- 01 full text, in Word docx or doc version , 3,000 – 5,000 words, Times New Romans, Font 11, line spacing 1,5, to be sent to the organizers before 05 June 2023.
The above-mentioned documents should be sent to the e-mail addresses: "HybriconMada@protonmail.com and colloque@univ-analanjirofo.mg" (It is imperative to include both emails when submitting). An acknowledgement of receipt of the submitted documents will be sent to the main author of the article for traceability. All authors will be contacted for a better fluidity of information relating to the event.
