Theatre Nohgaku is pleased to announce an opportunity for a return to Japan! Once again we’ll be able to offer in-person workshops to learn about one of the world’s most extraordinary performance practices.

Please join us for one of two intensive 3-week workshops: Noh Training Project Japan, and the Mask Making Workshop.

Noh Training Project Japan
When: June 23 - July 13, 2023
Where: Tokyo, Japan
The Noh Training Project workshop features six hours of training per day in noh chant, dance, an introduction to musical instruments, as well as lectures on theoretical and practical elements of noh, including dramatic structure, masks, and costumes. Participants will have the opportunity to attend several noh performances, and learn from accomplished practitioners from both Theatre Nohgaku and Kita School professionals including the Kita School’s only female professional Kinue Oshima. The workshop culminates in a student recital on a noh stage. 

All sessions are conducted in English or in Japanese with English translation. Enrollment (based on application acceptance) is limited to 12 participants.

Payment instructions will be sent upon applicant’s acceptance into the program. Registration fee covers: cost of instructional materials, a practice fan, a pair of white tabi, yukata, hakama, and tickets to noh performances. Air travel, accommodation, food and local transportation are NOT included.

Mask Making Workshop
When: June 23 - July 13, 2023
Where: Tokyo, Japan
The Mask Making workshop features daily instruction by Master Artisan Kitazawa Hideta. Mr. Kitazawa has conducted numerous workshops and exhibitions including at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford; Peking University and the Central Academy for Drama, Beijing. The workshop will include selection of single hinoki block for carving, use of all tools and paints, and daily guidance by Mr. Kitazawa as students learn to carve their own mask. An exceptional and once-in-a-lifetime experience.

All sessions are conducted in English or in Japanese with English translation. Enrollment (based on application acceptance) is limited to 3 participants. Early application advised.

Payment instructions will be sent upon applicant’s acceptance into the program. Air travel, accommodation, food and local transportation are NOT included.
