The Graduate History Association of the Department of History at The University of Alabama previously announced its hosting of the Thirteenth Annual Graduate Student Conference on Power and Struggle. This year, the conference will be held at The University of Alabama on February 10-11, 2023. All papers should be submitted by December 2, 2022.

The conference’s theme addresses new approaches of historical analysis that focus on the relationship between struggle and power, especially people who struggled to break, transform, or reclaim the boundaries constructed by those in power. We encourage graduate students to submit papers that examine these relationships across various temporal, geographical, and topical fields and disciplines. The conference seeks submissions employing theoretical approaches, interdisciplinary methods, comparative perspectives, and multi-archival research bases that push the bounds of historical interpretation.

The GHA Conference Committee seeks submissions concerning, but not limited to, the following topics:

● Power in institutions, society, and religion

● Struggle in cultural expression, social relationships, and belief systems

● Power in discourse on gender, race, and class

● Struggle against labels in nationalism, ethnicity, or sexual identity

● Power in traditional structures such as politics, diplomacy, imperialism, and war

● Struggle in resistance such as crime, protest, liberation, and revolution

Papers submissions should range from 12 to 25 double-spaced pages in length, include a full title, and a one-page CV of the submitter. All submissions should be sent in PDF or Word format via email to Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
