Archival research is a critical skillset for many academic disciplines, yet it is seldom taught in graduate programs. To address this need in a Canadian context, the ARCI is a one-day seminar where graduate students receive training in conducting archival research from academic faculty, professional researchers, archivists, and librarians. The Center for Foreign Policy and Federalism welcomes applications from Canadian students enrolled in, or currently embarking on, M.A. or Ph.D. programs  concerning Canadian environmental / foreign relations / military / political history, international relations, or Cold War studies. We also welcome applications from postdoctoral fellows or senior undergraduate students who have applied for graduate studies. Expert speakers will explain how to:
  • prepare for an archival trip
  • conduct archival research
  • research at foreign archives
  • work with digital archives (digital humanities)
  • collect and manage your archival data

The 2016 workshop will be held on Thursday, 5 May 2016. The final deadline for applications is 15 April 2016. Application packages should include a curriculum vitae and a one-page (12 pt. font, double-spaced) proposal outlining how your research will benefit from participation in ARCI. All application materials should be submitted via e-mail to cfpf@uwaterloo.ca. CFPF will try to confirm receipt of all application materials.

CFPF will subsidize accommodations and meals for participants. Students, however, should expect to cover their own travel expenses, and are thus encouraged to request travel funding from their home institution. For further information, please contact cfpf@uwaterloo.ca.
