AFRICAN-AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE AREA CALL: The African-American Popular Culture Area of the Midwest Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association (MPCA/ACA) is seeking single papers and complete panel sessions examining all historical, contemporary, and/or emerging aspects of African-American popular culture. Analyses from all critical theories, approaches, and methodologies from diverse fields and disciplines are strongly encouraged.

PROPOSAL INFORMATION: Submissions should be made electronically via our online submission system at http://submissions.mpcaaca.org/. (1) Complete/key-in your full Submission Title as requested followed by your (2) Name and Email Address in the Co-Authors section. (3) Select your email address in Submit for User section or leave blank. (4) Select the African-American Popular Culture area from the drop-down menu for Area. (5) Key-in (or cut-and-paste) a 250-500 word Abstract with your name, department/program/office/organization affiliation, email address, and special scheduling needs (if applicable) in the space provided. You may also attach your abstract with name, affiliation, email address, and special scheduling needs in a document with the .doc, .pdf, or .rtf extensions, if desired. (6) Indicate if you need audio-visual equipment for your presentation in the Need Audio/Visual Equipment section. NOTE: (a) The Association will provide a LCD player and monitor but you must ask for it at the time you submit your proposal. (b) Special scheduling needs will be considered but may not necessarily be honored. (c) Please do not submit the same item to more than one Area. (d) Proposals will be peer-reviewed by the Area Co-Chairs. Proposers will be notified of the status of their proposal within two weeks of submission but no later than May 31, 2016.

Deadline for receipt of proposals is Saturday, April 30, 2016.

REGISTRATION AND MEMBERSHIP (http://mpcaaca.org/info/conference/): All conference participants must be members of the MPCA/ACA. Membership is for the calendar year through December 2016. Membership fees for students w/ID, retirees and unemployed is $65 and $70 for all others. The membership fee is separate from the conference registration fee. All participants must register for the conference. Conference registration fees for students w/ID, retirees and unemployed is $105 and $110 for all others. Nonmember conference registration is $170 for students w/ID, retirees and unemployed and $180 for regular nonmembers. All fees postmarked on or before September 15, 2016, will not be assessed a late fee of $15. (The late fee is waived for residents of countries other than the USA or Canada.) 

CONFERENCE INFORMATION: Conference panel sessions will run at the following approximate times: Thursday 8:00am-5:00pm, Friday 8:00am-6:15pm, Saturday 8:00am-6:15pm, and Sunday 8:00am-4:30pm. Special events will include two featured speakers and a cash-bar reception on Friday, October 7 and a luncheon which is scheduled on Saturday, October 8 from 12:00pm–1:30pm. These events, plus continental breakfast on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, will be free for conference registrants. Two special pre-conference scholarly writing workshops will be offered on Wednesday, October 5 from 8:30am-12:30pm and 1:30pm-5:30pm for an additional $35 or $60 for both. These workshops are geared towards graduate students and new professionals interested in writing scholarly articles or book proposals; lunch is included in the fee.
