Bridge to Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate - Colonial Latin American History

UIC’s Department of History seeks to hire a scholar of colonial Latin American history for a Bridge to Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate position. Area of specialization is open, but the department is especially eager to review applications from scholars whose research examines early Indigenous and Black histories of Latin America to support our growing department strengths in the study of slavery and colonialism. Scholars of pre-contact societies, Indigenous or African slaveries, and scholars who specialize in studies of encounter and resistance are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to support our Latin American history program which includes eventually training graduate students in Latin American history.
The position is funded by UIC’s Bridge to Faculty (B2F) Postdoctoral Program, a university initiative designed to increase faculty diversity at UIC by recruiting and retaining scholars from historically underrepresented groups. Subject to satisfactory performance and University approval, the successful candidate may be re-appointed for one additional year as a postdoctoral scholar. Successful postdocs in the Bridge-to-the-Faculty program can transition to tenure-track faculty at UIC starting in the 2025-2026 academic year. The Department of History has a successful track record of transitioning B2F Postdoctoral Research Associates to tenure-track positions after the conclusion of the two-year postdoc.
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will have access to institutional and departmental initiatives specifically designed to support assistant professors headed to the tenure-track. This unique opportunity provides a structure for postdocs to be mentored to assist them in building a successful teaching portfolio and program of research.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Teach one course during the second year of the fellowship
- Complete any necessary postdoctoral research in order to prepare their dissertation for publication
- Prepare an article or book chapter for submission to a peer-reviewed journal or university-press anthology
- Attend professional conferences
A PhD in History or related historical discipline filed by August 15, 2023, but no earlier than August 15, 2019.
