“Autobiographical Writings in an Interdisciplinary Research Environment:

Individuals, Texts and Practices”

Moscow, National Research University Higher School of Economics, 1-2 June 2016

Dear colleagues!

                  We are pleased to invite you to take part in the conference “Autobiographical Writings in an Interdisciplinary Research Environment: Individuals, Texts and Practices,” which is going to take place in Moscow on 1-2 June 2016.

                  The conference is being organized by the Interdisciplinary autobiography study group of the Faculty of Humanities at the National Research University “Higher School of Economics.” The main goal of the conference is to explore possibilities of a common language in the study of autobiographical texts in various disciplines: cultural studies, history, philology, philosophy, anthropology, psychology, and sociology.

                  The organisers of the conference are planning to run three thematic sessions: 1) The theory and history of studying first-person accounts; 2) Accounts about the self in Russia: new texts and new approaches; 3) Autobiographical writings in the countries of Western Europe: similarities and differences.

                  Working languages: Russian, English.

                  Length of papers: 20 minutes.

                  A publication based on the results of the conference is planned.

                  There is a limited budget to help cover the transport costs and/or living expenses of some Russian participants, which will be distributed on a competitive basis.

                  A paper proposal including an abstract (up to 200 words) and an application form must be submitted by 15 April to: The papers selected by the conference committee will be announced no later than 1 May.

                  Applications should include the following information:

  1. Surname, name and patronymic.
  2. Place of work/study
  3. Title of paper + abstract
  4. Mobile number
  5. If relevant, the need for financial support with details of the reasons (transportation/accommodation) and an approximate amount.

The study of autobiographical narratives is one of the priority areas of cooperation between the Interdisciplinary autobiography study group at the National Research University The Higher School of Economics and the German Historical Institute in Moscow ( On 3-4 June 2016 straight after the conference a seminar will take place organized by the DHI in Moscow. The subject of the seminar is “The Sacral and the Secular in Autobiographical Practices of the Modern Period (Eighteenth to Early Twentieth Centuries)” ( We invite everyone to take part in the discussion!
